What is TEFA?

The Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA), sometimes called an Education Savings Account (ESA), empowers parents to direct a portion of state education funds toward their child's private school tuition and approved educational expenses.

Up to $30k For Students with Disabilities

Funds can be used for

  • Private school tuition and fees
  • Uniforms, books, and technology
  • Tutoring, assessments, and therapies
  • Transportation and special services

Who is Eligible?

  • U.S. citizen or legal resident of Texas
  • Eligible to attend public school in Texas
  • Not enrolled full-time in public/charter school while receiving ESA

Prioritization Categories

Because the program may have more applicants than funds, students are prioritized into four tiers.

Tier 1 Priority Access

Students with a disability
(defined by Texas Education Code Sec. 29.003)


Family income
≤ 500% FPG

Tier 2 High Need

Children needing financial support.


Family income
≤ 200% FPG

Tier 3 Moderate Need

Children needing financial support.


Family income
200% - 500% FPG

Tier 4 General Access

Everyone else
(depending on available funds)


Transfers from public schools prioritized.

February 4, 2026. Apply on the Texas Comptroller website.

Allocate Funds

Once approved, direct funds to St. Thomas More tuition.
